Electricity, explained

How our calculations work

Plain formulas, clear assumptions, and the limits behind every estimate.

Electricity bill

Monthly cost = kWh × rate in cents ÷ 100 + fixed charges

The annual projection multiplies by 12, assuming unchanged monthly use and prices. Taxes and unentered charges are excluded.

Appliance cost

Daily kWh = watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours
Period cost = daily kWh × days × cents per kWh ÷ 100

The annual appliance projection uses 365 days at the same daily pattern, rather than twelve 30-day periods. Example presets are scenarios, not verified product specifications.

Plan comparison

Each plan uses the bill formula with identical usage. The result is the absolute monthly difference, with the cheaper option named separately. The annual difference multiplies by 12.

Precision and input validation

Currency is rounded to two decimals for display. Nonnegative numbers, zero prices, and zero usage are supported. Daily operating hours cannot exceed 24. Blank, nonfinite, negative, and out-of-range values are rejected.

Limitations

These tools do not model tiered prices, demand charges, time-of-use schedules, discounts, equipment cycling, or changing tariffs. Outputs are educational estimates, not utility quotes or individualized advice.
